Background to Syben

The bioscience sector is widely acknowledged to be a high growth, high value added sector. Lord Sainsbury's "Biotechnology Clusters" report, published in 1999, highlighted the importance of the clustering of bioscience businesses.

The report identified Yorkshire and the Humber as having one of the UK's biotechnology clusters. This cluster was based mainly on the research strengths of the region's excellent universities. In South Yorkshire, bioscience has been identified as an emerging industry with the potential to make a significant difference to the region's economy.

SYBEN was established in 1998 in order to support South Yorkshire's relatively young bioscience sector, to maximise its potential for growth and to enhance its contribution to the region's economy.

SYBEN is lead by an active steering group drawn from key players in the regions bioscience industry, leading academics, local government and professional service provders.
