Bioscience in South Yorkshire

Overview

South Yorkshire has a nucleus of bioscience companies, which has expanded significantly over recent years and has the potential to continue to do so. There is a mixture of established bioscience companies and new start-ups at the early stages of their development.

The region has two excellent universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, both of which are actively involved in bioscience research.

These universities are able to compete with the very best UK institutions and this is underlined by the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results. The Life Sciences Departments in the University of Sheffield were all graded 5*, and the Biomedical Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University graded 4* in the ratings - research comparable with, and sometimes exceeding that of Oxford, Cambridge and London.

Many of the region's most exciting new companies have spun out of the University of Sheffield. In addition, there are a number of government/public laboratories and health authorities within the region having involvement in the bioscience research field.

Bioscience companies within the region can readily access current and emerging bioscience technology from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

South Yorkshire has particular strengths in three major areas. Click on the links below to download an information sheet.
