bio2work

What is the bio2work programme?

Sponsored by Yorkshire Forward, bio2work is an innovative new programme to help employers within Yorkshire & Humber’s bioscience and healthcare industries to recruit suitably trained graduate level staff.

Why has bio2work been established?

bio2work has been established in response to concerns raised by regional bioscience and healthcare companies that although new graduates have an excellent science background, they often lack the commercial knowledge needed to be ‘business ready’. The programme has been designed to increase the number of graduates with the correct skills for entry into the bioscience and healthcare industries, and to increase company productivity by reducing the time taken for graduates to become fully productive in the industry.

What will the bio2work programme involve?

At the heart of the approach is a highly-focused and tailored training programme, geared towards the commercial requirements of the local industry, developed through consultation with companies. The programme will be delivered in the region over an eight week period in January-February 2007, where by new and recent graduates and post-doctoral graduates in relevant bioscience disciplines will up-skill in the fundamental commercial and laboratory skills desired by corporate employers.

The programme will train graduates in the practical realities of work in industry, including laboratory skills, delivered in a GLP framework/ethos, as well as commercial and industrial awareness, including key topics such as intellectual property and finance. Sector specific training will be complimented by development of graduate’s transferable skills, such as critical people and business skills, information and communication skills.

bio2work will be open for applications from new and recent graduates who are keen to secure employment in the Yorkshire & Humber region. In addition, companies are also invited to moon identify individuals to participate in the bio2work programme. The programme will be equally relevant for those determined to put their scientific knowledge into practice in either a bench or business role.

How your company can be involved.

Companies of all sizes in the region’s bioscience and healthcare industries are invited to become ‘sponsors’ of the programme. There is no financial contribution to be made by sponsoring companies; however, those companies will be asked to support the programme in a variety of ways, a little or big involvement, such as:

  • Provision of input into the content of the bio2work programme
  • Provision of industry or careers presentations
  • Provision of site visits

SYBEN would ask that all sponsor companies attend the Gala Drinks Reception and Dinner at the end of the programme in support of the graduates who will be required to deliver brief team presentations. This will also be an ideal opportunity to prospect for potential future employees!

Why be involved in the bio2work programme?

In return, sponsoring companies will get access to a pool of unique individuals equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes you yourself identify as essential requisites for employment in your industry. Should you choose to recruit an individual from the bio2work programme, their usefulness to your company at the commencement of their employment will be greatly increased and you will have a new starter that can contribute much quicker than other graduates.
