Based on the work of Dr Jamal Nasir, of the University of Sheffield Medical School, Genophrenix has identifed several proteins and their genes that interact with a key component that is implicated in schizophrenia.
Schizophrenia is considered to be a severe, debilitating and chronic brain disorder affecting approxminatly 1% of the population. The worldwide market for drugs that treat the disorder is worth $1.4bn, however traditional treatments have tended to target the symptoms, rather than the cause of the disease and have potentially severe side-effects as well as limitied efficiency.
By understanding which genes are involved in the disease and targeting these rather than attempting to treat the symptoms. Genophrenix believes that more specific and efficacious drugs can be developed with reduced side effects.
Genophrenix will initially focus on developing targets and compounds to treat schizophrenia and aims to provide commercially viable licensing opportunites that will be attractive to the global pharmaceutical industry.
