Industrial CASE Awards
(Co-operative Awards in Science and Engineering)
What is it?
CASE awards are organised by the UK Research Councils (e.g. BBSRC, EPSRC, etc). They fund top quality graduates to undertake a three-year programme of research training in a partnership between an eligible academic institution and a co-operating company. Students spend part of their training period working within the company, and are jointly supervised by an academic and a company supervisor. Industrial CASE awards are allocated directly to companies who define the research topic and take the initiative in establishing a link with an eligible academic institution.
CASE can provide an economical way of solving your research, design or manufacturing problems. The scheme allows the industrial partner to benefit from a direct link to the fertile grounds of academic research for an extremely modest outlay, the academic supervisor to establish a "real-world" application for their research, and the student to benefit from postgraduate training to PhD level from both environments.
Who can apply?
All size of organisation can apply for and industrial CASE award. Proposals are particularly welcomed from SMEs.
How much does the company pay?
Companies must provide a minimum level of contributions to the student and academic department and these are added to the payments from the Research Council. Companies are required to contribute at least £3,000 a year to the income of the student and £1,400 a year to the academic department.
