New Business Manager joins SMIC

The Sheffield Medical Innovation Centre (SMIC) has appointed Martin Whitaker, PhD as its new Business Manager to co-ordinate knowledge transfer projects within the University of Sheffield’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. SMIC is based at the Sheffield Bioincubator and its role is to interface with healthcare providers such as the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and NHS Innovations Medipex, and to facilitate links with pharmaceutical companies interested in collaborating with the Medical School. By developing both these internal and external links it is envisaged that commercial, research and teaching contacts can be quickly established across the wide range of healthcare research at the University of Sheffield in the shortest possible time. The SMIC Business Managers position is jointly funded by Biofusion PLC and one of Martin’s roles will be to link the business arm of the University of Sheffield with the world class research base within the Medical School. A key goal for SMIC is to enable early identification and exploitation of intellectual property, licensing and spinout opportunities from within the Medical School that will be commercially beneficial for the University of Sheffield. Prof Richard Ross, Director of SMIC said

“We are delighted with creation of SMIC as a single healthcare business hub and through the exploitation of commercial opportunities we can promote the development of knowledge transfer and interdisciplinary collaboration within the Medical School ”For further information on the Sheffield
